Long ago, the woman known as the Princess of Shadows was attacked and bitten by a vampire.
Ever since, she has been forced to move in darkness. In more recent times, she has found a place as the principal strategist amongst the Veil Riders.
The riders of the veil are an army of warriors that use large birds to deploy smoke, masking their position and, incidentally, creating an artificial darkness for the Princess
